Instead, I take the time to gain an understanding of who they are, their cultural backgrounds, where their values and strengths lie, and what motivates them in order to support them in building and maintaining lives of meaning and fulfillment, regardless of circumstances. Using a combination of therapeutic strategies, I tailor treatment to each individual.”

I often work with clients in determining which (if any) work/school accommodations may be beneficial and assist clients in navigating that process. My approach is warm and curious, and I get the most joy out of learning about my clients in terms of the “whole person” they are, versus a diagnosis.

I enjoy sharing the knowledge that I have gained about trauma, neuroscience, neurodiversity, and chronic illness and how that impacts our bodyminds. Yet I find that many of my clients’ therapeutic epiphanies come about when I am reflecting their experiences back to them and helping them to connect the dots to form a more holistic view of themselves. I love working with people who are wanting to look inward and untangle the web of their life.

Melanie’s message: I am passionate about providing services to individuals who have been diagnosed with or self-identify on the Neuro-diverse (ND) spectrum. This could be dyslexia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia, ADHD, and ASD (formely referred to as Asperger’s, high-functioning autism). I, myself, was diagnosed with dyspraxia as an adult and in the post-diagnostic period of processing, I was able to have a profound shift in my oreintation to the world – now seeing neurodiverse qualities in myself as well as in others. I see people doing things “differently” all the time, and I want to both support them and empower them to to have choice in how they interface with the neurotypical world. Across the last 15 years,
I have provided counseling and psychotherapy to individuals diagnosied with neurodiverse conditions, those self-identifying, those exhibiting symptoms of ND, and partners of those with symptoms of ND. To know more, please visit my Neurodiversity page on my webstie: https://www.melaniechitwoodtherapy.com/neurodiversity
I have been connected to and passionate about the fields of psychology, counseling, and mental health throughout my life – and – across four different countries including both the East and West Coasts of the United States. Anaïs’ message: Being neurodivergent is my primary identity. I started specializing in neurodivergence as soon as I realized there were many others who, like me, have struggled to understand who they are and be accepted in a neurotypical society. As a woman of color who grew up in Africa, I also deeply care about offering a space where women, BIPOC, LGBTQIA+/queer, and other oppressed peoples can feel safe and feel seen. My work is always firmly nestled in viewing every person as unique with their own cultural identity, family history of migration or displacement, and ways that they may experience socio-economic injustice. Through a therapeutic and collaborative assessment model, I offer testing that is meant to witness your personal story, help you make sense of your experiences, and send you on your way to heal and to grow into a fuller version of yourself, with greater self-understanding and self-love.
